To prevent Szechuan pepper from crunching like sand when chewed after grinding, it is important to remove the hard, black seeds from the peppercorns before grinding. These seeds are the main cause of the sandy texture. Additionally, to achieve a smoother texture, the peppercorns can be toasted in a dry pan before grinding to release their oils and enhance their flavor. Finally, grinding the peppercorns to a finer consistency can also help to reduce the sandy texture when chewed. **
